Peppercorn Cafe

We were looking for charcoal burger buns and Nokia Asha 501 at SS15, Subang Jaya when we came across Peppercorn Cafe, a nice little cozy restaurant with a catchy yellow signboard, just like my Nokia Asha 501. There was set dinner available and we gave it a try. We sneaked in some Tong Kee egg tarts to munch on while we waited for our food to arrive.

The set dinner consists of an appetizer, soup-of-the-day, main course of your choice, dessert and a drink. The choices were grilled rib-eye steak, braised lamb shank, grilled chicken, grilled salmon or black cod. We ordered a set each, one medium rib-eye steak with red wine infused brown sauce (RM36 nett), and one fillet of grilled salmon with cream caper sauce (RM32 nett). Both main course were served with a side of boiled or mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables with garlic.

Appetizer: Chicken wings stuffed with minced meat and mushroom, served with fresh salad.

Toasted one-sided garlic bread to go with the soup.

Soup-of-the-day: Cream of leek with croutons and freshly cracked black peppers.

Only two miserable slices of stuffed chicken wings served but the salad dressing was pretty good. The garlic bread is only buttered and toasted one-side, which we prefer if both sides are buttered and toasted. The main course came before we even finished the soup!

The salmon fillet is sweet but a tad soft, crumbly and not as good as Mami's pan-seared salmon which is crispy on the outside and sea-fresh firm in the inside. Girl-girl rates it at 7/10.

Rib-eye steak was done correctly, medium cooked with the meat juices flowing out as the knife cuts through it. Red wine infused brown sauce is good. Boy-boy rates it at 6/10.

Freshly brewed coffee, black, no sugar.

The choice of drinks were coffee, tea or lime juice. We went for the coffee without hesitating. Thick, black and strong.

Cream caramel for both of us.

Dessert-of-the-day was ice-cream or cream caramel. We tried the cream caramel, which was certainly different than the typical Wall's or King's ice-cream. It is soft and the sweetness is just right. However it was not as smooth as it should be. Overall it was still alright.

Peppercorn Cafe is open daily for breakfast and lunch, and only Fridays and Saturdays for dinner. It is closed on Sunday. Prices are nett, no service charges and government tax! Thumbs up.

We'd humbly rate our experience as below:
Food: 6.5/10
Ambiance: Cozy and relaxing place to dine.
Service: Good.
Price: Reasonable. $ / $$ / $$$

Revisit? Yes, to try out the breakfast and other set dinners.
Halal? Pork-free. Waitress is a Malay lady.
